Dick and Betsy DeVos have made charitable donations amounting to 139 million dollars in their lives. These dwarf the political contributions they have made over the years. According to a report from their website, Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, they gave away about 12 million dollars in 2015 alone. The charitable donations for that year alone double the amount they have given to political causes for the last five years which is 5.3 million dollars. Dick’s dad and Amway co-founder, Rich DeVos, led his family to be a participant in Republican politics. According to a list published by Forbes titled “America’s Top Givers,” Rich and his grown children donated around 104 million dollars. Due to this, they were ranked 24th on the list.
According to information provided by the DeVos Family, they have a lifetime donation of just over 1.3 billion dollars, and this is huge compared to their 5.2-billion-dollar fortune. Dick’s wife, Betsy, also comes from a wealthy family from Holland that is known for its charitable and political giving. She was the daughter of the late Edgar Prince, an industrialist. Dick and Betsy prioritize education in their charitable giving, and this is evident from their donations in the past. In 2015 alone, 26 percent of their donations went to educational causes. They also dished out an additional three percent to support groups that advocate for education reforms. Dick DeVos states that the ultimate goal of these donations is to address the shortcomings of the public education platform that is engineered to work the same for different instances. He does not, however, criticize the employees.
According to Dick, he and his wife chose to specifically support environments that have accountability, adult supervision and support, and academic rigor. The DeVos started the country’s first aviation-themed charter school that they donated the first aircraft, write annual checks to, and bring A-list speakers to the school due to their connections. Arts & Culture is the next big thing the Dick and Betsy give to after education. 21 percent of their donations in 2015 to Arts and Culture. The DeVoses mostly do not follow up on the spending of their donations. They also involve their kids on where they decide to donate to next.
